What are the implementation needs for catch shares?
Implementation needs for catch shares are no different than needs for other fishery management systems. Managers need to be able to accurately count fish caught and landed, fish and other animals discarded and impact on important habitat. Good monitoring will ensure effectiveness of catch shares, as will a scientifically-determined catch limit. Our study shows basic monitoring and science is implemented significantly more often in the context of catch shares.
