What are the most common complications during limb lengthening? What are the most common complications during limb lengthening?
During the limb lengthening procedure there may be such side effects and complications as: A. Pin track infection, which is prevented by proper pin track care. If this is not controlled pin loosening is inevitable. It is uncommon for an experienced surgeon to find it necessary to alter pin sites when infections occur. B. Joint stiffness because of the muscles contra pulling effect during lengthening, which is prevented by regular physiotherapy; C. Deformity of the bone regenerate. Due to selective muscle pull direction (see section dictionary). This complication needs correction during lengthening; D. Vessel and nerve injury – by wrong wire insertion technique. The prevention is – the surgeon must know the “save corridors” for wire insertion very well “see dictionary”.
