Cataracts are very common and happen as we age but are frequently occurring at younger ages. A cataract is a cloudiness or yellowing of the internal lens of the eye that causes the vision to be poor by blocking light passing through the eye. The early signs of cataracts can be detected and action can be taken to delay or stop the process. UV radiation from the sun and cigarettes are some of the primary environmental factors in the condition. Pterygium or Pingueculae are yellowish bumps on the whites of the eyes that can eventually grow over the front part of the eye and need to be surgically removed. UV exposure and wind are often environmental causes.
