What are the origins of the Bachelor of Cultural Tourism degree?
The Cultural Tourism discipline at Flinders University was established in 1997 following a feasibility study that identified a need for a Cultural Tourism degree to complement the Bachelor of Technology (Ecotourism) – nature based tourism – that the university introduced in 1996. Global statistics from the World Tourism Organisation in 1991 showed tourism growth in the niche areas were growing faster than traditional (mass) tourism (8%pa) with Cultural Tourism at 15%pa and ecotourism/adventure tourism at 25%pa. Growth rates in niche or special interest tourism since that time has continued to outstrip mass tourism. The original Bachelor of Cultural Tourism was based within the school of Cultural Studies in Cultural Tourism along with Australian Studies, Legal Studies and Archaeology.
