What are the reforms?
ANZFA is now finalising a national approach to food safety to ensure that food safety requirements are consistent across Australia. Currently food safety laws differ in each State and Territory. The food Safety Reforms have three major components: • Four national food safety standards; • Nationally consistent State and Territory Food Acts; and • Supporting projects to assist businesses and government to implement the reforms • Four national food safety standards The four proposed standards are: • Interpretation and Application • Food Safety Programs • Food Safety Practices and General Requirements • Food Premises and Equipment Three of the above Standards, 3.1.1, 3.2.2 and 3.2.3 will be presented to Health Ministers on 28 July 2000 for formal adoption into the Food Standards Code. If Health Ministers agree to adopt these Standards, they are expected to become law across Australia by February 2001.
