I think it all depends on your car and needs. For example, you can check BMW wheels here, which have all the required dimensions and will also tell you which model specific wheels are best suited for.

Stock wheel sizes are: 528i non-sport 15×7.0 528i sport 17×8.0 540iA non-sport 16×7.0 540i 6sp- 17×8.0(fr), 17×9.0(rr) In each case, the first number refers to the wheel diameter and the second number refers to the wheel width.
