What are the three basic types of aquarium filtration?
The three basic types of filtration used in aquariums are biological, chemical and mechanical filters. Biological Filtration uses nature to keep your aquarium clean. There are two types of biological filtration. These two types are known as aerobic (nitrifying) filtration and anaerobic (de-nitrifying) filtration. Both of these types of filters work by cultivating bacteria or algae which convert the toxic nitrogenous waste of aquatic animals into less harmful nitrogen compounds. These compounds may be gases that naturally escape into the air or liquids that can be removed by doing periodic partial water changes. Examples of aerobic biological filters you can buy are under gravel filters, wet/dry or trickle filters, and fluidized bed filters.
