What are the valid / allowed characters for AOL and AIM screen names, and how are they normalized?

We’re building an application that allows users to enter an AOL / AIM Screen Name for their contacts, and we would like to perform basic validation on that input. However, I have been unable to find documentation on the allowed characters for AOL / AIM Screen Names and how those are normalized (lowercase?).
