If you have your site hosted on one of the better known companies like Lunar Pages, you probably got hit with a password hack. Someone used a program to guess your FTP password and hijacked the site. This happened to my wife’s site a few weeks back. Lunar Pages said that the server logs showed an access from a domain in Russia that is known to hack websites for criminal purposes. We were fortunate that we caught the damage before anything really bad happened. Your best bet is to select a password that cannot be easily guessed. This means that you’ll also have to select something that’s hard to remember, which is the conundrum with these things. You’ll also need to change the FTP password fairly often, to keep them from getting in. Make it at least 12 characters long, use numbers and a mix of capital and lowercase letters.
