Varroa Mites (V. Destructor sometimes mistakenly called V. Jacobsoni) are a parasitic mite (lick a tick) that sucks the body fluids of the honey bee. Varroa in small numbers exist in every hive. When a hive becomes weak Varroa can overwhelm it. Varroa first came into the US in 1987.
