A web search engine is a searchable database that looks for things throught the world wide web, e-mail, usenet, gopher, etc. To use an analogy, a web search engine is like the database of a library catalog. All you need is a couple of key words in order to conduct a search. A search engine will compile all the pages posted on the internet that either contains those key words or has topics related to it.
