What, besides the price, is the difference between cheap and expensive car tyres?

Grip and wear are the differences. Cheap tyres grip poorly and wear out quickly. Since tyres are the only contact between your car and the road surface it is wise to fit good tyres. Please note that I said good tyres, not expensive tyres. You can find good tyres such as Michelin. Pirelli, Dunlop, Firestone, Bridgestone etc at reasonable prices if you do your research. In Hampshire, Micheldever Tyres undercut all the national outlets considerably. Consequently I buy my Michelins there alongside all the Porsche and BMW owners who also save a fortune. I recommend that you choose a recognised named tyre and search the net or Yellow Pages for deals. Most high street tyre shops will rip you off as will ordinary garages.

They don’t call cheap tyres ‘ditchfinders’ for nothing. As with anything in life, you get what you pay for. With tyres it depends to some extent on the car and the use it’ll be getting put to. While I’d never buy a really cheap, budget tyre that’s been made in Vietnam or India, it’s probably not necessary to put top of the range Michelins or Pirellis on a 10 year old Corsa that spends all its time pottering about town and never goes above 50mph.
