What can I feed my 20 year old horse for joint supplements?
I have used a couple different supplements for my older horse over the years. I’ve used Next Level, which worked great, but my mare did not like the taste. Therefore, I had to orally inject it everyday. To make things a bit easier, I switched to Joint Combo, which also has a hoof and coat supplement in it. I’ve found that this works great as well, and doesn’t break the bank. (They also make one without the added hoof and coat supplement.) When my local mill stopped carrying that, I tried Absorbine’s Flex Plus, which I have found to be great! Any one of these work well, but I would recomend Flex Plus. She has been on that for a couple of years now. Even in her old age, I still ride her as well. She is actually leased out while I am in college, and she is teaching a young rider to barrel race. I believe that the best way to keep them young and thriving is to keep them working. Of course, we do take special precautions when riding, like using protective legware, warming and cooling her pr
Lots of options for you out there. We supplement with pure Glucosamine HCl, 7000mg a day for our 26 year old horse. It’s the best value. We top dress it onto his daily beet pulp mash. There is also Adequan, Cosequin, and Legend. We’ve used those from time to time. Lots of feeds and combo supplements out there that contain glucosamine and MSM and chondroitin and god knows what else. I find them more finicky because you either don’t get enough glucosamine or you’re getting other stuff you didn’t want or need to pay for. But some people like them.
I would also recommend Cosequin. Our old horse has been on it since he was probably 20 or younger and he still competes Novice level eventing and some pony rallies with a young girl and he’s 24, almost 25 now. If you’re looking for something less expensive, I don’t know other brands(at least of the top of my head), but I recommend looking for anything with glucosamine in it. Glucosamine may help to rebuild cartilage and help with arthritis. Cosequin is the best because they contain such a concentrated does of glucosamine, and not as many extra fillers. good luck!
