What causes decompression sickness?
Decompression sickness, also known as “the bends”, is caused by improper decompression during a dive. When diving the body will absorb excess nitrogen due to the increased surrounding pressure. If the diver ascends faster than the nitrogen can safely out-gas, bubbles will form in the blood and tissues. The bubbles can cause damage and develop symptoms in several parts of the body including: limbs, central nervous system, cerebral, pulmonary, inner ear and skin.
