What could cause a woman to start lactating 23 months after stopping breastfeeding?
Sorry to hear about your son’s allergy – I’ve just been through the same thing with my son who is now 6 months old. The most common reason for milk production (which you’ve already excluded) is pregnancy but any hormonal imbalance can potentially have the same result. Things like stress, certain medications including oral contraceptives, problems with the pituitary gland or thyroid, or even PMS can cause you to lactate. The best thing to do is see your doctor to rule out any problems like hypothyroidism, and also to leave your breasts alone to let the supply dry up again. If you get really uncomfortable, then hand express a tiny bit of milk, just enough to relieve the pressure. If you stimulate your breasts and express too much then you’ll increase the milk production further.
