The vietnam war was a civil war in vietnam between the communist north and the south. Prior to the war, the French had control of vietnam. When the war broke out at first it was against french rule. Then America became involved because of the communist developments in vietnam. The USA backed the southern Vietnamese government against the communist north and the French exited the war.
