quote from wiki: Intestinal parasites are parasites that populate the gastro-intestinal tract. In humans, they are often spread by poor hygiene related to feces, contact with animals, or poorly cooked food containing parasites. The major groups of parasites include protozoans (organisms having only one cell) and parasitic worms (helminths). Of these, protozoans, including cryptosporidium, microsporidia, and isospora, are most common in HIV-infected persons. Each of these parasites can infect the digestive tract, and sometimes two or more can cause infection at the same time. Intestinal worms shouldn’t cause food poisoning but they may cause other complaints. For pictures go to the wikipedia and hit on the various blue links to view the pictures.

Food poisoning is caused by bacteria, not worms, although there are a few dozen worms that are spread through uncooked food, such as tape worms, round worms, hook worms, flukes, and pin worms. Tape worms are flat, very long (they can be more than 10 feet), round worms are similar to tape worms but they are round and not quite as long; hook worms are about an inch or so in length, pin worms are about 1/8 to 1/2 inch in length and look like thin pieces of rice, and flukes are almost microscopic flattend discs.
