What does a Project Manager do in software development?
The software project manager moves project forward by coordinating tasks for all team members. So much like a director in a movie, the project manager assigns tasks and tracks progress. Software developers are exceptionally focused individuals, and thus not typically great communicators. This created room for other professionals to assist in the software development process, such as Project Managers. The notion that any project manager can help software development is propagated by organizations such as Project Management Institute. This notion is ridiculous because while a movie director can see the results of good or bad acting, a non-technical project manager cannot hope to understand good or bad code. While all Software Project Managers communicate the project plan and business requirements, the best PM’s would also ensure quality software is built for long-term maintainability and scalability by inspecting the code being produced.
