Basically, they are an insurance conglomerate. Commercial insurance (factories, construction, airlines, etc.) makes up a lot of the premiums paid in the US. The split is around 50-50, give or take 5-10%. They are not having problems due to their traditional personal and commercial US insurance operations…these entities are still profitable. They are having trouble due to the London bond insurance market where they partook in credit default swaps. The only US entity giving problems would probably be United Guaranty, which insures mortgages. The credit default swaps are mostly unregulated and participated in by hedge funds, banks, and insurance companies. I would hope after this mess that the government acts to make this sort of insurance regulated. The amounts of collateral put up by AIG were nothing compared to the risk they took.
