What does the independent variable in a science experiment mean?
For example, we can set up an experiment in which we measure time needed for an apple to fall from different heights. First we go to the first floor, release the apple and measure the falling time. Then we go one floor up, repeat the measurement, and so on. In this experiment, the height from which we were releasing the apple, we can consider as independent variable, and the falling time as dependent variable, because the time depends on our freely selected heights.
