What is Peat Moss? Sphagnum peat moss is 100% organic matter made up of partially decomposed aquatic moss that accumulates in the lower levels of a peat bog. Unlike compost, which typically decomposes within one year, peat moss decomposes slowly over several years. It has a reliable pH (3.4 to 4.8), is environmentally friendly and free of insects, weeds, seeds, salts and chemicals.
