What exactly is the function of the Port District?
The Port is Trustee of the tidelands which encircle the Bay. • Is the Port District a public agency? Yes. • Do we have the ability to vote on an issue like this? No. • What about a ballot measure to halt expansion at the airport? If we could win such a measure, it might be a positive step to resolving the airport delimma. But the likelihood that we could win is much lower than trying to stop the North Terminal itself and could have devastating consequences if such a measure didn’t pass. We believe if the measure didn’t pass, it would be seen as a mandate to keep the airport where it is, no matter what the cost to the county’s economy. If someone out there had 3 -4 million to spend on a campaign, it might be worth a try. But remember, the Port can out spend us a hundred to one.
