First Louis Armstrong brought Jazz out of New Orleans and spread it not only across North America but around the world. He was the first soloist. His playing was so great that they would allow him to play solo in the middle of songs. We take this for granted now but it was never done before Louis Armstrong. All the musicians you hear doing solos from Clapton to whomever in the middle of a song owe it all Sachmo. He invented scat singing that is using his voice as an instrument. He was said to have used his instrument like a voice and his voice like an instrument. He brought Jazz to the world and because of his incredible talent was able to cross the color barrier.
