What happens during a Thyroid Scan?
• There are two different approaches (at least!) to Thyroid Scans. • In the first approach, the patient swallows one or more pills containing a small amout of radioactive iodine. • On the following day, the amount of iodine concentrated in the thyroid gland is measured and the thyroid is scanned with the nuclear medicine camera. • In the second approach, a non-iodine radiotracer is given intravenously. • Imaging is performed the same day. Uptake by the thyroid gland can only be estimated. • Of the two approaches, the using radioactive iodine can theoretically provide more information, but is less convenient for the patient. • Each approach has its supporters.
