What Happens to the Earth When the Pole Shifts?

The earth is not a perfect sphere it is an oblate spheroid; so it bulges at the equator and is flattened at the poles. Centrifugal force due to the rotation of the[40] earth on its axis causes the bulge. This bulge tends to keep the poles in place much as a gyroscope tends to resist change in its motion. If something dramatic enough happens, like an asteroid a half kilometer in diameter or larger hitting the earth at the proper velocity, it overcomes this stabilizing force for a period of time.
