By June 2009 a range of projects will have been implemented in the Macquarie Marshes and Gwydir Wetlands to allow water to be more efficiently delivered to the wetlands, and system savings and water purchases will mean that more water is available for the environment. Other projects, like those focussed on weed research, vegetation mapping, hydraulic modelling and inundation mapping, will provide a greater knowledge of the wetland systems. This research will be incorporated into the Murray-Darling Basin Plan’s environmental watering plan and accredited Water Resource Plans developed under the Australian Government’s Water Act 2007. In addition, the research will inform the Environmental Management Plans for each wetland, which are aimed to provide long term guidance on the management of the wetlands, beyond the life of the Program.
