What Happens to the MPD Special Operations Unit and why isn it being replaced?
The Metropolitan Police Department has been planning to consolidate a number of its divisions (including the Special Operations Division) into a single location for many years. In 2006 the District signed a new long term lease in Southwest DC for this consolidation. Notwithstanding conflicting statements made by the District Government in August, 2007, the Mayor has stated that the District is renovating that building and plans to relocate the MPD Special Operations Division from the West End to the new facility in early 2009. Neither the MPD nor the city has any other future uses or plans for the property at 23rd and L, and therefore decided to include it with the redevelopment plan for the Library and Fire Station.
