What happens when animals hibernate?
william1941 Teacher Community / Jr. College Expert $(document).ready(function() { $(‘a.toggle_expert_titles’).click(function() { $(‘#show_expert_titles’).toggle(); return false; }); }); Some animals hibernate to protect themselves from the extreme conditions presented by their environment. Prior to hibernating these animals eat a lot of food which is stored in their body as a thick layer of fat. The fat provides nutrition while the animals hibernate and also act as a protection against extreme cold. During hibernation the body temperature f the animal drops to a level that is almost equal to that of their surroundings. The heart beat and rate of breathing also slows down and other metabolic functions almost come to a stop.
