you do not need anything to listen to frequencies that use CTCSS (PL). CTCSS is used by the receiver to operate the squelch. Instead of carrier operated squelch, it uses a sub-audible tone to open the receivers squelch. BUT, if you are just listening to the channel, you do not need to operate the squelch with CTCSS and carrier would work just fine. PL is a trademarked term, it belongs to /\/\otorola while CG is GE’s Channel Guard. HOWEVER if you really gotta have CTCSS, check the Communications Specialties (COMMSPEC) sell small CTCSS encode/decode devices. If you tell them the receiver that you plan to use, they will include a schematic and give detailed installation advice.
