What has Royal Caribbean agreed to do?

Royal Caribbean has agreed to install advanced wastewater treatment (AWT) technology throughout its entire fleet, and report publicly on the performance of these systems. On May 3, 2004, Oceana received a letter from Richard Fain (PDF, 167Kb), Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean, confirming Royal Caribbean’s commitment to equip every ship in its fleet with AWT systems during normal drydocking, meaning that the entire fleet should be retrofitted with the systems by 2008. Also, all new ships purchased by Royal Caribbean in the future will be built with AWT installed. This commitment is a big step forward on the part of Royal Caribbean, and we believe it will have economic as well as ecological benefits.
