If a situation like Edward VIII wanting to marry Wallis Simpson were happening today, it would probably play out the same way. The main reason that he was forced to abdicate was that he was a known Nazi sympathizer, unsuitable to be the King, lacked any sense of duty or responsibility to his country, and didn’t really want to be King. He was delighted to be able to shuck it all of on his brother, take the money the family gave him….and lived the rest of his life in idleness in exile.
