What is a Charter School?
• is a public school funded with public money; • is a public school where there is no tuition; • is non-sectarian, non-religious, and may not discriminate in student admissions; • is operated by parents, educators, and/or community leaders; • is free to be a unique school designed to meet the needs of the students it intends to serve; • is a public school that operates under a contract with the local school board, state board, or a university; • is a public school whose curriculum is determined by the charter school board of directors; • may have the same transportation as that provided by the local school district; • is required to meet the same graduation standards as other schools; and • is responsible for improving achievement or it will be closed.
A charter school is a free, nonsectarian, innovative public school that controls its own curriculum, staffing, organization, and budget. Charter schools are designed to deliver a unique program tailored to meet the needs of the students they serve. In exchange for their autonomy, charter schools must deliver the academic results they have promised in their charter contract.

Like other public schools, charter schools serve students from kindergarten through the 12th grade.
A Charter School is a Public School in which educators have designed and created an innovative program in order to meet one of the following purposes: (a) improve pupil learning; (b) increase learning opportunities for pupils; (c) use different and innovative teaching methods; (d) measure learning outcomes using different and innovative forms of measurement; (e) establish new forms of accountability for schools; or (f) create new professional opportunities for educators, including the opportunity to be responsible for the learning program at the school site.
