A codec can be thought of as a driver for your media player. Codecs are used to compress video files into smaller video files. Popular codecs include DIVX and XVID. To watch videos that have been compressed using a codec, you will need to download and install those corresponding codecs. You can find different codecs for download at http://www.divx-digest.com. A multimedia codec is a small piece of software which allows you to watch videos or listen to music of a specific format. There are many different multimedia formats and so you may need to install several codecs. Ubuntu includes many codecs by default. Many applications in Ubuntu use the GStreamer open source multimedia framework. The codec plugins for GStreamer are organised in different packages depending on the licensing that applies to the various codecs. You can see which codecs are contained in which plugin on the GStreamer website. Other applications, such as Mplayer and Xine, do not use the Gstreamer framework. Due to patent and copyright restrictions, codecs for these programs are not included in Ubuntu by default. For more information on these read the Restricted Formats wiki page. To install extra codecs, press Applications → Add/Remove…, type “codec” in the Search box and select which codecs you want to install. Press Apply to install the selected codecs.

The word codec is short for compressor/decompressor. When you install a video codec on your computer, what you really are doing is giving Windows Media Player instructions how to compress/decompress movies in that file format. If the needed codec is missing you will receive an error message that Windows Media Player is unable to download an appropriate decompressor. For more information about this problem, see section 6.1.
