A database administrator is someone who works very closely with databases (obviously). They typically are responsible for tasks such as setting up databases and database servers, dealing with security issues (user accounts, passwords, etc), installing upgrades to the database software in such a way that they don’t blow things up (databases typically need to be online almost all the time), making sure the database doesn’t lock up or suffer from poor performance, and making sure backups are run.
