What is a dateline?
On stories in newspapers there is first a title for the article. Directly under that is usually the by line, the author of the article. After that is the dateline, which gives the date the article was written and sometimes where it was written. So if a reporter on tv were to say I am coming to you live(today) from The Olympics in Canada, that would also be a dateline. Walter Cronkite used to end his reports with, “and that’s the way it is on Monday the 5th of May.” That is also a dateline.
