What is a Digital ID? What does it mean to Sign Objects?
A Digital ID binds an individual or organization’s identity to a pair of cryptographic keys. Digital IDs are issued by a Certificate Authority, such as VeriSign. VeriSign performs a set of background authentication checks before issuing a Digital ID. Subsequently, VeriSign provides lifecycle services to issue, maintain, revoke, renew, and provide coverage for the ID. When information is encrypted using the private key associated with a Digital ID, the end result is equivalent to a digital signature. First, users can be assured of the source of the information. Second, they can be assured that information has not been corrupted or otherwise altered since the time it was signed. For more information on Digital IDs, please visit the VeriSign Repository.
