What is a good character analysis for Mary Warren in the Crucible?
Mary Warren was the servant of John and Elizabeth Proctor. She is one of the oldest girls involved in the accusations of witchcraft. She makes a doll in court, which she gives to Elizabeth Proctor. The doll has a needle stuck in its stomach. Abigail turns up pretty soon with a stab wound in her stomach, leading the judges to issue a warrant for Elizabeth’s arrest. John Proctor scares Mary into admitting that the girls were lying, and Mary agrees to testify in court that all the girls were liars. However, once they get to court, Mary folds under the harsh questioning. The girls begin saying that Mary is bewitching them and so Mary sees no choice but to go back on the girls’ side and begins screaming that she is still bewitched. Mary was a very easily swayed character. You can assume that she began her role in the witchcraft accusations because she was bored and tired of having no power as a woman and a servant.
