What is a Miracle Fruit?
Miracle Fruit, or Synsepalum Dulcificum, is a plant found mainly in Africa. Miracle Fruit is also the name for the berries grown on the plant. These berries are also known as Miracle Berry, Magic Berry, Magical Fruit, and Flavor Berry. They were first documented in 1725 by the explorer Chevalier des Marchais. And what makes it so miraculous? Miracle fruit is a special fruit known for its ability to modify our sense of taste. So what do I mean by that? Well the miracle fruit has a unique property (a glycoprotein called miraculin) which helps enhance the flavors of other food. It’s most popular for its ability to change the sensation of sour, into the sensation of sweet. Now imagine having the ability to eat an entire lemon or lime, while looking forward to a delicious taste! Some have said that because of the fruit’s ability, it even stimulates appetite. Something worth noting is that the miracle fruit does not only exchange sour for sweet, but it enhances existing flavors.
