What is a proxy server?
Some institutions gain access to the Internet via a server which is not on their site. These servers are known as ‘proxy servers’. If your institution uses a proxy server, you will need to by-pass it in order to get access to our online journals. The same can apply if your institution uses a firewall. There are some exceptions. If the proxy server or firewall has been set up to service your institution or department only, you may be able to get access to the online journals without by-passing it.Your Computing Officer/IT Department should be able to tell you whether your institution uses a proxy server/firewall and, if so, how to bypass it. If not, please contact OUP Journals help desk.Registering your IP addressAfter adding an institutional subscriber number to your Oxford Journals account, you will be taken to an Institutional Details screen where you will be asked to enter your IP addresses.
When we know definitions for IP, ports and protocols, it is time to try to understand what a proxy server is. Last year New Year I decided to visit my friends in France and chose to go by train to get there. I telephoned the railway station to book tickets from Moscow to Paris but I found out that the tickets were all sold out. I booked tickets from Moscow to Berlin and from Berlin to Paris and in two days, just before Christmas, I was in France.
