What is a Special Problems class?
A Special Problems course, sometimes called a Special Projects course or a directed study course, is usually a self-paced class that you take with a particular professor. It has the course designator of DISC 6398. To take such a class, you would approach a professor in the MIS area and ask him or her if they would be interested in doing a special problems class for you. Remember that you are asking the professor to do you a favor in that special problems courses are considered an above the call of duty sort of task. If he or she says yes, then you and the professor will decide what the project will be, how it will be graded, what you should read and do, and in general, create a syllabus for you. You will use a Special Problems Request form to record this. The professor signs it, you sign it and the Chair of the department signs it.
