Acad is the Academic UNIX machine for The George Washington University. You do not need access to Acad to check your email. Email is on a separate system. The most common uses for Acad are to host personal web pages (not departmental/organizational pages), using PINE to check your Colonial Mail account, and writing programs in languages such as UNIX shell script, Perl, C, C++ and FORTRAN.
