ACE is a technique used to answer questions about your reading, especially brief constructed responses (BCRs). It is a great formula for answering questions–IF it’s applied intelligently. A-Stands for answer the question (all parts of the question) C-Stands for cite examples from the text (the more specific, the better) E-Stands for explain your examples. Just throwing down a quote from the text isn’t enough. Tell how the quote supports your topic sentence. Here’s an example of a well-written BCR response where the student used ACE format: Given the prompt: Which character in the book you are reading could be called a hero? The character in The Lord of the Rings who could be called a hero is Gandalf. In the story, Gandalf fights a deadly creature called a Balrog allowing Frodo, Sam, Gimli, Aragorn, Legolas, and Boromir to escape.
