What is advocacy?
Advocacy refers to a broad range of activities that involve identifying, embracing, and promoting a cause; an effort to shape public perception that may or may not require lobbying or changes in law; and using effective tools to create social change. Types of advocacy include: • Public education • Policy education • Research • Convening key partners or stakeholders • Case advocacy • Judicial advocacy • Executive (Administrative) advocacy • Voter & candidate education • Organizing and mobilizing individuals or communities • Legislative advocacy (lobbying) A private foundation may, without limitation, fund a public charity to engage in general advocacy. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to participate in advocacy work to help achieve their goals and missions and to help WKKF achieve its mission.
