What is Annie’s life expectancy?
The prognosis we received before Annie’s birth was not good—that she might not survive birth and if she did, she would only live a few months, possibly years. However, she has surprised all the doctors and is doing well now at 6 years old. Most children with Aicardi Syndrome pass away either before the age of one or into their early teens—times when the brain is going through lots of growth and changes. However, other children have passed away in their early childhood years, and others in their late teens. A small number of others have lived to be in their 20’s, but not many. Studies show the average age of death in Aicardi Syndrome is 8.3 years old, the median age at 18.5 years of age.
