What is available in shared hosting environments today for site security?
Until now, a Web host could not properly apply security in a shared environment. There have been attempts to share a single SSL certificate among several domains. For example, a Web hosting company could get a certificate for its own domain and then link to other domains from within its secure site. Other domains could then use encryption capabilities of the Web host’s certificate, but there is no authentication of individual domains. This is a serious breach in security, since online customers do not know to whom they are sending their information. It also exposes Web hosts to liability claims, since their certificates are being used to secure potentially fraudulent transactions. Lastly, it also violates the terms of certificate use and forfeits the NetSureSM protection provided with the certificate.
