What is better for children white or grey tooth filling?
Both tooth colored (white) and silver (amalgam) fillings are safe for baby teeth. It really boils down to personal preference. Tooth colored fillings are more visually pleasing then silver. While not as pretty as white fillings, silver fillings are 100% safe. Silver fillings are also much less expensive then white. Most insurance companies consider white fillings on back teeth to be “cosmetic” so they will only pay the rate they would normally pay for silver fillings. This usually winds up costing patients $40-$50 more per tooth in addition to their normal co-pay and deductible. Some will argue that the mercury in silver fillings are dangerous, but the FDA has declared them to be absolutely safe. If your budget affords it, I would recommend white fillings – ONLY because they look very natural. If you are on a tighter budget, silver is save and will save you TONS of money!
