What is central serous retinopathy?
Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) usually affects young men and women in their 30s, 40s and 50s. The symptoms are at the center of the field of vision blurring, distortion, minification of objects and a dark patch at fixation. It presents with fluid spontaneously leaking into the sub-retinal space from the choroid.
Central serous retinopathy is sometimes misdiagnosed as macular degeneration. Central serous retinopathy is a disorder in which blood vessels underlying the retina leak, and there is secondary detachment of the retinal pigment epithelium. These leakages are usually stopped by laser photocoagulation. The condition has also sometimes been treated with anti-inflammmatory corticosteroids, but there are indications that they sometimes worsen the condition.
Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) also know as Idiopathic Central Serous Chorioretinopathy, is a condition in which there is a collection of fluid beneath the center (the macula) of the retina. The retina is the nerve tissue that lines the back wall of the eye. Much like the film in a camera, the retina is sensitive to light. It transforms light energy to nerve stimuli, and “sends a picture” through the optic nerve to the brain. The macula is the part of the retina that provides for sharp, clear color vision. Our ability to read and to see fine detail depends upon the health of the macula. The collection of fluid beneath the macula can interfere with its function. What causes this condition? The definite cause is unknown, but the onset of symptoms may occur at a time of unusual emotional stress. The condition typically affects healthy young and middle-aged males, ages 20-45. The eye is like a tiny camera, with lenses in the front and film in the back. The film is called the retina. At the center of the retina is a tiny spot called the macula, which provides most of the sharp central vision for reading and similar tasks. The retina has several layers. On the outer surface are the cells that actually detect the light. Just outside of the retina is a rich network of blood vessels that normally leak fluid. Between these two main layers is a single layer of cells called the Retinal Pigment Epithelium, or RPE. One of its many functions is to keep fluid from leaking out of the vascular area into the area under the retinal surface. Central Serous Retinopathy (or CSR) develops when a leak forms in the RPE.
