Chintz was originally a cloth produced in India and printed with flowers in a variety of different colors. Using calico cloth the designs were either painted on or stained into the fabric. Chintz became popular for use in homes in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries and was eventually produced there. At first Europeans copied the Indian patterns and later added their own original designs. Modern chintz consists of bright patterns printed on a light background. It is produced today on fabrics and various types of pottery. Chintz Ware is distinguishable by its dense, all-over pattern of flowers or, infrequently, other objects.
