What is Citizenship Education and is it compulsory in schools?
Citizenship aims to promote knowledge and understanding of active and responsible citizenship through the development of skills. It covers three main areas: political literacy, social and moral responsibility and community involvement. It became statutory in secondary schools from September 2002; it forms part of PSHE (Personal, social and health education) in the primary curriculum.
