Hi Izzyy, A code of silence can be imposed on one or more people or it can be an unwritten agreement usually between a group of people. When I worked in a prison Environment, I was obliged to maintain a silence about anything or anyone I met in the course of my duties. Prisoners also maintain a code of silence if something happens in the prison they will maintain a silence about the matter by saying “they don’t know anything” if asked by prison authorities. Often the reason people in groups maintain a code-of-silence is because they are fearful of repercussions by other inmates. It is exactly the same when a group of school children will not admit to knowing anything about a situation where someone has been bullied. In counseling, anything that is said by the person being counseled is held in confidence.
